Which is better, Thermage from South Korea or HIFU? The latest prices in Seoul in 2026 + real experiences.

Recently, many people around me have asked me how to choose anti-aging treatments in South Korea, especially Thermage and HIFU. Which one is suitable for me? What is the price difference between them? And how long is the recovery period?

I might as well write a comprehensive article that outlines the actual prices I inquired about at several clinics in Seoul, the pitfalls that my friends encountered, and what the doctors had to say – all explained in one place.

First of all, it is important to understand that the principles of Thermage and HIFU are different.

Many people fail to understand the difference between these two procedures, assuming that they are both simply “facial lifting injections.” In fact, there is a significant difference between them.

  • Thermage: Utilizes monopolar radiofrequency energy to heat the skin from the outside in, thereby stimulating the contraction and regeneration of Collagen. It primarily targets the dermis layer.
  • HIFU: By using focused ultrasonic waves, the energy can penetrate to the deeper SMAS fascia layer (the same layer that is targeted during facelift surgeries), where it can heat the tissue precisely at specific points.

In simple terms, Thermage focuses on “overall tightening” while HIFU targets “specific Lifting areas.” For those with more sagging skin or a more pronounced Apple Zone, HIFU offers more immediate results; for those with thinner facial skin who wish to improve the overall quality of their skin, Thermage is more suitable.

The following are the actual prices provided by several Dermatology clinics in Gangnam and Cheongdam districts of Seoul for the year 2026. The unit of price is Korean won, and the exchange rate is approximately 170:1.

⚠️ Note: This price range represents the normal market conditions. If you come across offers below this range, be extremely cautious—these are likely counterfeit products or the work of inexperienced operators.

Comparison of recovery periods

Project Recovery period Pain intensity (1-10 points) The results are evident.
Thermage FLX There is virtually no recovery period; mild redness may last for 2 to 3 hours. 6-7 points (will apply an anesthetic ointment) Progressive improvement over 1 to 3 months
HIFU Mild swelling persists for 3 to 7 days, and there is a soreness upon touch. 7-8 points (the pain is relatively noticeable) Results become visible within 1 to 2 months.

My own experience: Last year, when I underwent HIFU treatment, the entire process, from applying the anesthetic ointment to the actual treatment, took about 40 minutes. The pain was similar to that of being snapped by a rubber band – it was still tolerable. After the treatment, I even went shopping in the afternoon; I’m not exaggerating at all. I’ve tried HIFU once before, and the day after the treatment, my chin and neck were so swollen as if I had candy in my mouth. It took around 5 days for the swelling to subside.

Can Thermage and HIFU be used together?

Sure, but there are certain rules regarding the order and time intervals:

  1. First use HIFU, then Thermage: One month after the HIFU treatment, Thermage can be used subsequently to enhance the results.
  2. First use Thermage, then HIFU; it is recommended to wait 2-3 months between the two treatments.
  3. On the same day: Regular clinics generally do not recommend this, as they are concerned about excessive accumulation of energy.

I had the HIFU Lifting procedure last year, and at the beginning of this year, I added Thermage for further tightening. The combination of the two procedures indeed yields better results than doing just one alone. However, it still depends on how the doctor evaluates the condition of your skin; not everyone is suitable for this combination of treatments.

I’ve fallen into these traps myself; you should avoid them.

Trick 1: Seeking to save money by using fake probes

Both Thermage and HIFU devices come with strict quality assurance mechanisms. However, some small clinics in South Korea use recycled or smuggled devices, which are much cheaper but significantly less effective. A friend of mine had a Thermage treatment at a clinic in Gangnam for just 9.18 million won, but the results were virtually the same as if no treatment had been done at all. It was only later that we found out the clinic was using second-hand devices.

Recommendation: It is advisable to verify the authenticity of the probe before the procedure. For Thermage, you can scan the QR code on the box; for HIFU, you should request to see the original packaging.

In South Korea, some clinics allow nurses or non-specialized doctors to operate the HIFU device, which is actually quite risky. The energy emitted by the HIFU can penetrate to the fascia layer, and improper operation may cause nerve damage.

Recommendation: Choose a clinic where a dermatologist personally performs the procedures, and make sure to request verification of the doctor’s license.

Trick 3: Only focusing on the price, ignoring the number of hair strands

There is a significant difference between undergoing 300 and 400 HIFU treatments. Some people opt for the 300-shot option in an attempt to save money, but if the doctor fails to target the correct areas, the treatment will be ineffective.

Recommendation: Communicate thoroughly with the doctor about the areas you would like to improve, and let them assess how many grafts you will need – rather than focusing solely on the price.

Value-for-money recommendations for 2026

If your budget is limited, I recommend the following combination:

  • For my first anti-aging treatment, I started with 400 HIFU sessions on my entire face, focusing specifically on the Lifting of the lower half of my face.
  • If you want to achieve comprehensive improvements, consider Thermage 600 full-face treatment – it can improve skin quality and tighten the skin at the same time.
  • If you have a sufficient budget and want the best results, it is recommended to undergo HIFU and Thermage separately, with an interval of 1 month between each treatment.

All of the above are experiences that I gathered through my own inquiries and from friends who have actually undergone these procedures, and I share them here for your reference. As for which option is most suitable for you, it is truly necessary to let a doctor conduct a face-to-face assessment.

In summary

Which is better, Thermage or HIFU? There is no standard answer; it all depends on the results you want to achieve.

  • If you want to achieve overall firmness and improve the quality of your skin → Thermage
  • If you want to achieve Lifting and a defined jawline, choose HIFU.
  • If you want the best results and don’t want to spend too much money – then get both procedures, but with some interval between them.

In terms of prices, in the Seoul market in 2026, the cost for a full-face treatment using Thermage starts from 9.25 million won, while the cost for a full-face HIFU treatment starts from 9.28 million won. Any prices lower than these should be considered with extra caution.
